Introduction

Welcome to in-house legal’s growth community

The Juro team introduces The Bundle, with thanks to our contributors and our valued community of in-house lawyers and legal operations teams at scaling companies.

Tom Bangay is the Senior Director of Content & Community at Juro, bringing over 15 years of experience in legal content strategy and community building. With a BA in Law and European Law from the University of Nottingham and an MA in Human Values and Contemporary Global Ethics from King’s College London, Tom has built a career around supporting and engaging the legal sector. Since joining Juro in 2018, Tom has developed and led content initiatives that highlight the transformative power of Juro’s contract automation platform for legal teams, building a trusted community of over 1,000 lawyers from high-growth companies worldwide.

Tom’s background includes a wealth of editorial roles with a focus on legal content. He was Deputy Editor at Chambers & Partners, and then Managing Editor at the International Bar Association, where he covered global legal issues and trends in a range of publications and multimedia. He then initiated and managed Thomson Reuters Legal’s thought leadership programme, overseeing strategic content at the home of Westlaw and Practical Law.

Tom’s leadership in content and community at Juro is rooted in his deep understanding of the legal profession, which enables him to connect with in-house legal teams on issues that matter most.

Chapter 1

'Work-from-anywhere': legal's role

“The complexities of this project only add to legal and HR’s workload, to the point where teams find it easier to just say no” - Roderick van Vliet explores legal's role in implementing and supporting a 'work-from-anywhere' model.

Roderick van Vliet is a Senior Manager at EY where he advises financial institutions on prudential regulation. Before re-joining EY, Roderick held the role of Chief Risk Officer at Remote, where he was also the Head of Legal in 2020. Roderick started his career in criminal but now holds expertise in tax and compliance, data protection, and more.

Chapter 2

How to become an O Shaped Lawyer

“We must facilitate an atmosphere where colleagues aren’t afraid to hear the word ‘no’ or feel like they’re getting called out” - Dan Kayne explains the O Shaped Lawyer initiative, which helps lawyers to adopt the attributes that make them better business partners.

Dan Kayne was previously the General Counsel at Network Rail, and is the founder of the O Shaped Lawyer, an initiative designed to improve the legal profession. Dan has more than 20 years of experience in the legal sector, both in private practice and in-house. Dan has also been recognized for his contributions to the legal industry after being selected for several awards, including Legal Business Magazine's In-house Rising Stars and GC of the Year.

Chapter 3

Scaling your legal team

“Understand how your business is planning to grow, and how legal plays a role in this - not just now, but months and years from now” - Karen Klein walks us through the steps she takes towards securing buy-in for legal headcount.

Karen Klein is Legal Counsel at Chicago Sports Network where she also acts as an Executive Advisor. Before joining Chicago Sports Network, Karen was the Chief Legal Officer and Corporate Secretary at Relativity, a LegalTech platform.

Karen has a wealth of experience in-house and in private practice, spending almost thirty years delivering legal advice to venture capital, private equity-backed, and public companies.
