The Juro team introduces this issue with an overview of why lawyers make great entrepreneurs, how legal can enable the wider business, and what the future holds for contracts and document standardization.

Tom Bangay is the Senior Director of Content & Community at Juro, bringing over 15 years of experience in legal content strategy and community building. With a BA in Law and European Law from the University of Nottingham and an MA in Human Values and Contemporary Global Ethics from King’s College London, Tom has built a career around supporting and engaging the legal sector. Since joining Juro in 2018, Tom has developed and led content initiatives that highlight the transformative power of Juro’s contract automation platform for legal teams, building a trusted community of over 1,000 lawyers from high-growth companies worldwide.

Tom’s background includes a wealth of editorial roles with a focus on legal content. He was Deputy Editor at Chambers & Partners, and then Managing Editor at the International Bar Association, where he covered global legal issues and trends in a range of publications and multimedia. He then initiated and managed Thomson Reuters Legal’s thought leadership programme, overseeing strategic content at the home of Westlaw and Practical Law.

Tom’s leadership in content and community at Juro is rooted in his deep understanding of the legal profession, which enables him to connect with in-house legal teams on issues that matter most.

Document standardization is a no-brainer for legal teams in all companies, but particularly in scaleups. But how can lawyers working in high-pressure, high-growth environments get started with standardized contracts? Enter: oneNDA.

Electra Japonas is the Chief Legal Officer at Law Insider, and the Co-Founder of oneNDA, a crowd-sourced, open-source non disclosure agreement that has been created by the legal community. Prior to this, Electra held several senior legal roles at large companies like Airbus, The Walt Disney Company, British American Tobacco, and EY. Electra is passionate about redefining the role of lawyers as essential business enablers.

The latest on contracts with Juro's co-founders

How have contracts changed over the past few years? Juro's co-founders explore the problems Juro is trying to solve, the tech lawyers use to agree and manage contracts, and answer some contract-related questions from the legal community.

Richard Mabey is the CEO and co-founder of Juro, the intelligent contract automation platform. Under his leadership, Juro has scaled rapidly, backed by $38 million in venture funding from prominent investors including Eight Roads, USV, Point Nine Capital and Seedcamp, and the founders of companies like Indeed, Gumtree and Wise.

Richard trained and qualified at Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer, working as an M&A associate in London and New York. He gained an MBA from INSEAD, and then spent time at LegalZoom, learning to build legal tech products.

Frustrated by the manual legal processes that slow down businesses, Richard co-founded Juro in 2016, with a mission to help the world agree contracts faster. Beyond Juro, he hosts the "Brief Encounters" podcast, makes angel investments, and supports other ambitious ventures from the boardroom. Richard is a Fellow of the RSA, an adviser to The Entrepreneurs Network and sits as a Non-executive Director of Bright Blue.

Hanna Sommer is the Director of Global Operations at Liberis, and the Managing Director of Liberis Germany. Before joining Liberis, Hanna had several management consultancy roles, including at Baringa partners. She has over ten years of experience leading and implementing business transformation projects.

Alexis Alexander is the General Counsel at Inspired Education Group, and independent school group educating over 85,000 students across 110 schools in 24 countries. Before this, Alexis was the Head of Legal at Liberis, and the Senior Legal Counsel at IHS Markit. Alexis originally trained at Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer LLP, a leading global law firm.

Once you've established yourself as a seasoned lawyer at a scaleup, a lot of information simply lives in your head. How do you turn this information into a scalable knowledge base that is accessible for business colleagues?

Stephanie Ng-Fragner is the General Counsel at Oper Credits, a business that partners with leading mortgage providers around Europe to digitize the mortgage process. Before joining Oper Credits, Stephanie held the role of General Counsel at Pollen, where she first joined in 2018 as the sole counsel.

Scaling your legal career: from lawyer to CEO

In this interview series, we dive into the journeys made by lawyers who embarked on the entrepreneurial path to become CEOs. What advice can they offer aspiring legal entrepreneurs?

Mary Bonsor is the CEO and Co-founder of Flex Legal, an online platform that brings together pre-vetted lawyers and law students to deliver flexible legal assistance to law firms and in-house counsel. Before starting Flex Legal, Mary trained and became qualified as a Solicitor at Winckworth Sherwood LLP, gaining her LPC from BPP Law School. Mary was also the Winner of the European Women of Legal Tech Award in 2020.

Julia Salasky is the CEO and Founder of Legl, a platform that simplifies legal operations for law firms. Julia also founded CrowdJustice, an award-winning platform that makes the legal system more accessible.

Before starting these organizations, Julia was a UN Lawyer for the United Nations where she specialized in international trade law. She was also an Associate at Linklaters for three years.

Julia's work within the legal industry has been widely recognized, with Julia awarded the Financial Times Legal Innovator of the Year award.

Janvi Patel is an activist and entrepreneur, as well as the Co-founder of Support SEND Kids. She was previously the Chairwoman and Co-founder of Halebury where she specialized in client management and business development.

Janvi also holds several board member roles, including her role as an Executive Board Member for Schools on Wheels, and her Advisory Board Member role at Equality Now.
