Advanced electronic signatures at Juro

Juro’s native eSignature is designed to comply with the requirements for an advanced electronic signature (AES) under the eIDAS Regulation (Regulation (EU) 910/2014) and its UK equivalent (the Electronic Identification and Trust Services for Electronic Transactions Regulations 2016).

What makes a signature “advanced”?

Under Article 26 of eIDAS, an AES must:

  1. be uniquely linked to the signatory,
  2. be capable of identifying the signatory,
  3. be created using data under the signatory’s sole control, and
  4. be linked to the signed document in a way that detects any subsequent change to it.

Juro’s eSignature meets each of these four requirements. Each signature is created using a unique digital certificate issued by HARICA (the Hellenic Academic and Research Institutions Certification Authority), a qualified trust service provider listed on the EU trusted list, and cryptographically bound to the signed document. Any subsequent alteration invalidates the signature.

The certificate is issued in the name and email address provided by the signatory at the point of signing. This satisfies the identification requirement at AES level. Independent identity verification of the signatory is a requirement of qualified electronic signatures (QES), not AES.

Sole control is established through the signing flow itself. The certificate is issued in the name and email address provided by the signatory at the point of signing, and Juro’s audit trail captures additional data (including IP address, device information, and signing timestamp) that is uniquely attributable to the actual signing event. Taken together, this data identifies the signer and confirms the signature was under that person’s sole control at the time of signing.

Why isn’t Juro on the EU trusted list?

The EU trusted list (available on the European Commission’s eIDAS dashboard) registers trust service providers. These are the organisations that issue digital certificates and underpin signature infrastructure. It does not register the applications that use those services. Juro is the application; HARICA is the trust service provider. You can find HARICA on the EU trusted list under Greece.

How to verify an eSignature in a signed document

You can confirm the AES status of any document signed in Juro directly from the PDF download:

  1. Open the signed PDF in Adobe Acrobat Reader (free).
  2. Click the signature field, or open the Signatures panel from the View menu.
  3. Select “Signature Properties” — this shows the certificate chain, the issuing certification authority (HARICA), and the signature algorithm.
  4. Acrobat will confirm whether the certificate is trusted and whether the document has been modified since signing.

Alternatively, open the PDF’s Document Properties (File → Properties → Security) to view the certificate details embedded at the time of signing.

What if we need a higher level of assurance?

AES is appropriate for the vast majority of commercial contracts. If your situation requires QES — which involves verified identity checks performed by a qualified trust service provider (generally over video call) — Juro supports this via its Docusign integration.
