Chapter 1

Slack hacks at Klarna

How can legal use Slack to work more efficiently at a hypergrowth fintech? Johanna Carlsson, Legal Director at Klarna, shares her top hacks.

Johanna Carlsson is the VP Legal at Fortum, where she is also a board member. Before joining Fortum, Johanna was the Head of Legal at Klarna, where she spent five years.

Johanna is a commercial lawyer with more than 15 years of experience drafting, negotiating, and managing high-value contracts.

Chapter 2

Innovating legal at NatWest

NatWest’s legal team wanted to whittle down their contract database and make their legal documents more human. How did they do it?

Leigh Kirkpatrick is the Managing Legal Counsel at Natwest Group, with a history of holding legal positions at financial institutions. Before joining Natwest, Leigh spent five years at RBS where she was Senior Legal Counsel. Leigh first trained and qualified at Brodies LLP.

Leigh was also named the “Legal Adviser of the Year” at the Women in Finance Awards in 2017, and in 2015, she won the Law Society of Scotland’s In-house Rising Star award.

The Series A round: Thirdfort

Thirdfort completed an impressive $20m Series A in March 2022 - what was the experience like for the lean legal team?

Sam Ruback is the General Counsel at Thirdfort where he leads the group's legal team and manages all things risk, compliance and regulation. Before joining Thirdfort, Sam was the Legal Counsel at WorldRemit, and the Head of Legal at Generation Home. He originally trained as a Solicitor with Mishcon de Reya LLP, a prestigious law firm.

The Series B round: Omnipresent

Omnipresent raised a staggering $120m in their Series B round, in March 2022. What lessons did the GC, Lucy Ashenhurst, learn from the milestone?

Lucy Ashenhurst is the General Counsel and People Ops Lead at CUR8, as well as a Fractional General Counsel for businesses like Heuris Energy and Givematch, where she advises on corporate, commercial and employment matters. Lucy has held roles as General Counsel at several other businesses on a full-time basis, including Origen, where she helped set up the People & Culture function. Before that Lucy was at Omnipresent, where she was the tenth employee and built the legal function from scratch.

The Series C round: Form3

Form3 completed a $160m Series C round in September 2021. CLO Giles Hawkins shares his insights on managing stakeholders, selling your risk, and building exec-level trust.

Giles Hawkins is the Chief Legal Officer at Form3, where he also holds roles as the Group Company Secretary and Head of Risk. Giles has more than 20 years of experience in the high-growth technology sector, and he specializes in areas like fundraising, commercial law, negotiations, and M&A. Before joining Form3, Giles was a Partner at Ashfords LLP, a legal practice.

The Series D round: Paddle

When it comes to the Series D round, the business is no longer a scrappy scaleup, but a mature company - so what changes for legal? Maryam Ziarati McLoughlin, GC at Paddle, shares her thoughts.

Maryam is an experienced General Counsel and board advisor with a strong track record in scaling unicorn tech companies, overseeing $300m in funding rounds, a $200m acquisition, and guiding high-stakes legal functions. She was previously the General Counsel at Paddle, but is now the Founder of Lwyr, a legal, risk, and compliance advisory for fast-growth companies. Maryam was also recognized as a 2023 The Lawyer General Counsel of the Year finalist.

How can scaleups hold their own in contract negotiations against big industry players? There's no-one better to answer legal's questions than Laura Frederick, Founder of How To Contract and ex-Tesla lawyer.

Laura Frederick is the Founder of How To Contract and the author of best-selling book on contracts: "Practical Tips on How to Contract". Laura has more than 25 years practicing law across the globe and has delivered over 100 hours of training to thousands of legal professionals in the process. She has also held legal roles where she has led commercial deals at Fortune 500 companies like Tesla, as well as owning her own boutique law firm for five years.

Tom Bangay is the Senior Director of Content & Community at Juro, bringing over 15 years of experience in legal content strategy and community building.
